Congratulations y’all! I’m so hyped that y’all are getting married!
Step-by-step guide to getting married in Mt. Airy.
Here is the simplest version of how to do it.
- Schedule your appointment with the Surry County Register of Deeds.
- Complete the online marriage license application before you go.
- Bring both partners, valid photo ID, Social Security information, and payment.
- Bring any divorce paperwork or translated foreign birth records if they apply to you.
- Finalize the marriage license in person at the Register of Deeds office.
- Plan your ceremony within the 60-day validity window.
- Get married with your officiant.
- Make sure the completed license is returned correctly.
Marriage License Requirements
Before you can say “I do,” you’ll need to secure a marriage license through Surry County. Call the Register of Deeds office at (336) 401-8150 to confirm the current appointment process.
Bring these with you:
- payment of
$75.00by accepted card method - valid photo ID for each applicant
- Social Security numbers for both parties
- certified birth certificates if either applicant is under 18
- divorce decree if applicable
- translated foreign birth certificates if required
- your officiant’s name and phone number
Both applicants need to appear in person to finalize the license.
Ceremony options in Mt. Airy
Once the paperwork is done, you can keep things simple or make it personal.
- courthouse or civil-style ceremony if available locally
- private officiant ceremony at a venue, home, or scenic overlook
- small elopement with portraits around Mt. Airy or the Blue Ridge area
One of my favorite directions for portraits around Mt. Airy is leaning into the mountain backdrop and quieter outdoor spots instead of forcing everything into a courthouse-only look.
After your ceremony
Make sure the completed marriage license is returned correctly and keep certified copies if you need them for legal records, benefits, or name changes.
