Here is the simplest version of how to do it.
- Fill out the State of Maine Intentions of Marriage Form at the Town of Bar Harbor or download it online.
- Bring proof of identity (Driver’s License, Passport, or State ID), and if either of you were previously married, you’ll need certified copies of divorce decrees or death certificates.
- Either mail the form to the Clerk’s office (if you’re out-of-state) or visit in person.
- Pay the $40 filing fee. If submitting in person, credit cards are accepted at the Clerk’s office.
- It takes about 30 minutes to process if filed in person. Afterward, you’ll need to pick it up.
- Hire our officiant; ordained ministers, notaries, or judges from Maine can perform the ceremony.
- Attend your ceremony: Your officiant will perform the ceremony and file the completed license with the town clerk’s office within 7 days.
- Get Your Marriage Certificate: Pre-order at the time you pick up your license or request one later for $15.
