How do you get married at the Chesapeake Courthouse?
Here’s your checklist.
- Fill out a Marriage License Application and complete the application online.
- Schedule an Appointment before coming to the Circuit Court Clerk’s Office.
- Bring a Valid Photo ID + Social Security
- Pay the $30, cash only.
- Hire an officiant and schedule your ceremony
- Attend the ceremony
- Sign the Marriage License
- Congrats, you’re officially married!

HOW TO GET A MARRIAGE LICENSE IN CHESAPEAKE, VA
First, you’ll need to schedule an appointment with the circuit court clerk’s office in Chesapeake.
Requirements:
- Complete a Marriage License Application: Start online and complete in person.
- Valid Photo IDs: Passport, military ID, or driver’s license.
- Fee: $30 (Cash only)
Notes:
- Both must be at least 18 years old. If either of you is 16 or 17, you’ll need parental consent.
- Social security card if you don’t know your number.
- Phones, smartwatches, purses, and bags are not permitted in the building.

GETTING MARRIED IN CHESAPEAKE, VA
DO YOU NEED AN APPOINTMENT FOR A CHESAPEAKE COURTHOUSE WEDDING CEREMONY?
Yes, you need appointments for both your marriage license and a marriage commissioner.
Chesapeake has marriage commissioners available to perform your civil ceremony for a fee of $75 (cash only).
ARE GUESTS ALLOWED?
Yes, but the number depends on where you have your wedding.
Inside the courthouse: Only a couple of guests are allowed, and no photographs are allowed inside.
Outside in the courtyard: You can have family and friends by your side, and wedding photography is allowed outside.
CAN I HAVE A PHOTOGRAPHER AT MY COURTHOUSE WEDDING?
Absolutely! Photography is not allowed inside the courthouse, but you can take photographs outside before or after the ceremony. If you choose to get married outside in the courtyard, the photographer can capture your ceremony as well.
